Tomato bath || Karnataka style tomato pulao

Karnataka Style Tomato bath is one pot rice item which is very easy, tasty and filling. Today I am sharing Karnataka's popular tomato bath, we can call it as tomato rice or tomato bath or tomato pulao. I prepare this in 2 ways with and without adding masala's. Today I am sharing one of my favorite way, which is very aromatic with grounded masalas added in it. We can have this rice item as it is or with any raita like pomegranate raita(video). This tomato bath recipe saves many of  us when we have nothing to prepare at home and when you are in hurry or when you are back from journey's.

  Karnataka Style - Tomato Bath

Preparation time - 20 minutes
cook time : 10 min

Main ingredients : Tomato, rice

Ingredients 

Rice - 1 cup
oil - 1 tsp
ghee - 1 tsp
mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
cumin seeds - 1 tsp
curry leaves - 1 sprig
green chilli - 1
onion - 1
ripened tomatoes - 3 
red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp(adjust)
green peas - 1/4 cup(optional)
coriander leaves - 1 tsp
garam masala powder - 1/2 tsp

To grind 

coriander seeds - 1 tsp
fresh coconut - 1/2 cup
clove - 1
cinnamon stick - 1 inch
ginger - 1 tsp
garlic - 2 pods
red chillies -2
pudina - few strands (I did not added, as it is not available right now)

Instructions

1) Wash 1 cup of rice under water and soak it for 15 to 20 min.

2) In a small  mixer grind add all the ingredients mentioned "To grind" add some water and grind to fine paste. 

3)Now in a wide pressure cooker add 1 tsp of oil, 1 tsp of ghee when it heat then add mustard seeds. when it starts crackling add cumin seeds, later add curry leaves and fry well.

4) Then add green chillies fry well, later add finely chopped onions, salt and fry well.

5) When onions starts changing color then add fresh peas then fry it for few minutes. 

6) Now add finely chopped tomatoes cook it well on low to medium flames till it becomes mushy.

7) Now add red chilli powder, garam masala powder, adjust salt if need mix everything well.

8) Now add prepared masala paste and mix well.

9.a)If you are using normal rice -  add 2 glasses of water for 1 glass rice.  
9.b) If you are using basmati rice - add 1&1/2 glass of water for 1 glass basmati rice. 
Add water depending on the rice you are using.  boil the above  till you get bubbles on water.

10) Add soaked rice and finely chopped coriander leaves to the above mix. 

11.a) Cook rice for few seconds then close the pressure cooker and pressure cook it 3 whistles.
11.b) If you are using basmati rice pressure cook it for 1 whistle and reduced flames to low for a minute then switch off the flames. 

12) Let the pressure comes down naturally and then open the lid. mix everything well for once without breaking rice.

That's it our Karnataka Style tomato bath recipe is ready. Served it some raita and enjoy with your friends and family.

Tips:

** You can prepare this using sona masoori rice or using basmati rice, add water accordingly.

**Adding peas is optional, if available add it surely to get good taste.

  1. Tomato Rice looks super flavourful! I love how you have simplified the process so much by making it in a pressure cooker. Also, the freshly ground masala must have made the dish so beautiful. I'll definitely try out your method the next time I'm making Tomato Rice! :)

  2. Tomato Bhath is so flavorful and delicious one pot meal. I have grown eating this yummy dish . One pot meals are such a boon when you are short of time , you can still cook a nutritious meal.

  6. This tomato bath looks so delicious. I love tomato bath but have not tried making it at home as yet. Since this is a one pot meal, I'm surely going to try it out soon. Will be perfect for Sunday brunch.
